Admissions

How to Apply

To apply, submit Temple’s online graduate application along with an application fee of $60. 

Applicants must have completed their bachelor’s degree. A degree in a related field is preferred; however, all applications will be considered.

Candidates will be asked to submit the following along with their application. 

Transcripts

Submit official transcripts from every college and university you have attended.

An applicant is expected to have some academic background in Africology and African American Studies. All applicants must present credentials that are the equivalent of the appropriate baccalaureate degree at Temple University.

Letters of Recommendation

Submit three letters of recommendation from faculty and professionals.

Statement of Goals

In approximately 500 to 1,000 words, describe your specific interest in Temple’s Department of Africology and African American Studies; your research goals as they relate to Africology and African American Studies and the social relevance of the discipline; your future career goals; and your academic and research achievements.

Standardized Test Scores

Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) general test scores are required. A combined minimum score of 297 on the verbal and quantitative sections is expected.

Résumé

A current professional résumé is required.

Writing Sample

Submit a writing sample that demonstrates your ability to conduct research and write a scholarly paper relevant to the discipline. The paper should be no more than 20 pages in length and fully referenced according to a professional, scholarly style manual.

Interview

An interview may be required.

Transfer Credits

During the first term of enrollment at Temple, incoming graduate students may apply to have graduate credits taken at other accredited institutions count toward completion of their Temple degree. Grades of transfer courses must be “B” or better. After consultation with and approval of the advisor, the student must submit the following materials to the Graduate Committee.

  • A letter specifying the course(s) the student wishes to have considered for credit toward the MA and the corresponding Temple course related to the transfer course.
  • Supporting documents (e.g., syllabi, course descriptions from college catalogs, a letter from the transfer course instructor or department) showing the overlap by which the course covers material from Temple courses.

The maximum number of credits a student may transfer is six (6).

Additional Requirements for International Applicants

Applicants who earned their baccalaureate degree from an institution where the language of instruction was other than English, with the exception of those who subsequently earned a master’s degree at a U.S. institution, must report scores for a standardized test of English that meet the following minimums.

  • TOEFL iBT: 79
  • IELTS Academic: 6.5
  • PTE Academic: 53
